Learn the 5 tenets of coxing

1. Safety

Of themselves, the crew and of others. This should inform any action a cox takes - it could involve positioning in a race, actively ensuring all rowers in their crew are happy and healthy, maintaining their own health and acting as first point of contact for any crew member safeguarding concerns.

2. Steering

Whilst being safe, the cox should be able to accurately match circulation plans in practice and deliver smooth, efficient, optimal lines on race day. This requires close understanding of the rules, reading the water, steering a point instead of a line and finding the deepest water.

3. Calls

More than a “coach in the boat”, the cox should provide, safe, effective calls that connect with individual crews and let them focus on rowing alone, adjusting tone, rhythm and volume to motivate, inform and reassure.

4. Organisation

The cox should always keep tabs on each crew member to ensure they are adequately informed and training properly, as well as consciously trying to become a student of the sport and cooperating with the coaches. They should consider how much information the crew actually needs.

5. Care

Of people and equipment. The cox is responsible for damage to the boat, blades, coxbox etc - they should actively take an interest in maintenance and repair of this equipment. Similarly, the cox has a responsibility to help all crew members perform in a healthy, happy environment.

Steering does not have to be scary. As a cox, it ranks second in your list of priorities - but it is still a crucial part of any race. It is also very teachable - with the right coaching, every cox can steer a race-winning line, no matter the conditions.
